Innocent Azubike Umezulike

Hon. Justice Innocent Azubike Umezulike (1953–2018) was one of Nigeria’s most decorated judges. He is considered the longest serving Chief Judge in South-East Nigeria, as well as the second longest serving Chief Judge in the country. He contributed immensely to the region’s legal ecosystem, most notably through his writings, which sought to reform the society, as well as educate other legal scholars. Recognized for his legal prowess, Hon. Justice Innocent was nominated by the Federal Government of Nigeria to serve in the Supreme Court of the Gambia, coming after just four years of serving on the Bench in 1997. This is also testament to his undying advocacy for all that is fair and just in the society. At the time of his death, he was an acclaimed Professor of Land and Property law and author of over 25 books.
